The Ultimate Care Guide: How to Wash a Weighted Blanket

Weighted blankets can be a bit of an investment, so you want to make sure that it lasts for a long time — and that starts with knowing how to wash a weighted blanket. Just like quilts, comforters and sheets, weighted blankets can harbor dust mites, allergens, food crumbs (if you’re a midnight-snacker) and other debris that get in the way of a good night’s sleep, which means they need to be washed regularly. But how, exactly, do you wash a blanket that weighs up to 30 pounds? In this guide, we’ll show you how to wash a weighted blanket — and our best-selling weighted blankets, in particular — so you can keep snoozing with your favorite bedtime companion for years to come.

Steps for Washing a Weighted Blanket

Ready to get your weighted blanket smelling fresh and clean? Before we explain how to wash a Gravity Blanket, let’s quickly go over some general care guidelines for weighted blankets.

1. Consult the Care Label

Before you throw your weighted blanket in the washing machine, you should consult the manufacturer’s instructions on the care label. Weighted blankets come in various fabrics, some of which are easier to care for than others. (Cotton weighted blankets, for example, are super easy to wash, whereas linen-rayon blends may need to be taken to a dry cleaner.)

2. Check for Spots and Stains

Next, check your weighted blanket for stains. If your weighted blanket has a stain, you’ll want to spot treat it with a mixture of gentle detergent and water. Start by mixing one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with two cups of water. Dip a cloth or a brush in this solution and gently scrub the stain. You can also try pre-soaking your weighted blanket to help loosen the stain.

3. Wash Your Weighted Blanket

Once you’ve gotten the stains out of your weighted blanket, it’s time to refer back to the care label. Some weighted blankets can be machine-washed, while others can only be washed by hand. If your weighted blanket is machine-washable, you should wash it alone (i.e., no other clothes in the load) using cold water. Do not use fabric softener or bleach.

4. Dry Your Weighted Blanket

Generally speaking, the best way to dry a weighted blanket is by letting it air-dry. On top of using less energy (and thereby saving you money), air-drying will also help extend the life of your weighted blanket.

How to Wash a Gravity Blanket

Now that you have a general overview of how to wash a weighted blanket, it’s time to learn how to wash our best-selling Gravity Blanket. If you read our previous blog on what weighted blankets are made of, then you’ll know that a Gravity Blanket consists of two main parts: a weighted insert and an outer duvet cover. These two components each have their own unique washing instructions.

Washing the outer cover of your Gravity Blanket couldn’t be any easier:

  • Remove the outer cover from the weighted insert.
  • Put the outer cover in the washing machine and pour in some non-chlorine bleach.
  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with similar colors.

Like we said, easy-peasy!

Washing the weighted insert may require a little more effort. At Gravity Blankets, we do not recommend putting our weighted inserts in your home washing machine because it can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the blanket and will likely exceed your laundry machine’s capacity.

Instead, we recommend washing the weighted insert by hand. Here’s how to do it:

  • Fill a bathtub (or a large container) with water.
  • Pour in a gentle detergent and swirl it around.
  • Place your weighted insert in the water and gently knead it with your hands.
  • After a few minutes of kneading, drain the tub and replace it with fresh water. Repeat this process until you can squeeze clean water out of the blanket.
  • Drain the tub once more, squeeze the water out of the blanket and hang it up to dry outside.
